For more than 30 years, Des Moines Public Schools has operated a summer food service program, with sites providing free meals to all children 18 years of age or younger.

There are a total of 31 meal sites throughout the community that offer lunch; 26 of those sites also offer breakfast.

Funding for the program is through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2016, the school district served children 47,000 breakfasts and almost 100,000 lunches during summer break.
