Lead Testing & Monitoring
The Des Moines Public Schools realizes the importance of a safe and quality environment for our students, staff, and community. One additional environmental issue that is monitored is lead containing materials. DMPS follows all EPA requirements.
The district must occasionally make repairs within school buildings that may involve lead containing materials. Work could include sanding and cutting which may create lead dust and chips from lead based paint. All DMPS facilities employees and all preventive maintenance employees have been trained by licensed trainers and are certified in lead safe renovation by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
During major renovations it is the contractor’s responsibility to follow lead-safe work practices and follow simple procedures to include containment, minimizing dust, and clean-up.
Though not required until 2015, DMPS has begun testing school buildings for lead.
