Six DMPS Graduating Seniors Receive Rotary Scholarships

Six Des Moines Public Schools students are receiving $8,000 scholarships from the Rotary Club of Des Moines.

The money will help the graduating seniors pay for the college of their choice.

Bethany Wildt (Hoover) says she’ll pursue a degree in nursing.  Laura Garcia-Camacho (Lincoln) says she’ll attend ISU’s Family Consumer Science Center. Phuong Dao Thai (North) came to the U.S. from Vietnam two years ago not knowing how to speak the language.  She’s earned A’s and B’s ever since.  She wants to become a pediatrician. Reannan Barlow (East) will attend the University of Iowa and will eventually pursue a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.  Zoey Stackhouse (Roosevelt) wants to become a pediatrician and work in third-world countries.  Lindsey St. John (Scavo) will purse a Bachelor in Business and plans to open her own businesses someday.

The Rotary Club of Des Moines (RCDM) is proud to announce the 2014 Local Scholarship recipients.  RCDM gives scholarships each year to one graduating senior at each of the six public high schools in Des Moines- East, Hoover, Lincoln, North, Roosevelt and Scavo.

This year’s winners are Bethany Wildt (Hoover); Laura Garcia- Camacho (Lincoln); Phuong Dao Thai (North); Reannan Barlow (East); Zoey Stackhouse (Roosevelt); and Lindsey St. John (Scavo).   They will be honored at the April 24th Rotary Club of Des Moines lunch.

Each student will receive a four- year scholarship totaling $8,000, made possible by the RCDM Foundation.    The scholarships can be applied to tuition at a private or public four-year university, or at a two-year community college, followed by two years at a four-year institution.

Financial need plays a large role in selecting the winners. Academic achievement and expectations of success in college is considered as well as the student’s record of volunteer service to his or her school or community.

The Rotary Club of Des Moines is made up of 300 business leaders from the Des Moines metro area.  It is the oldest and largest club in the state of Iowa.  Rotary International has 1.2 million members in 200 countries.   The object of Rotary is:  The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; high ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
