Moulton School Wins Burpee Home Gardens “Grow Anywhere Tour” Visit
Moulton Extended Learning Center has been selected as a winner of the Burpee Home Gardens “Grow Anywhere Tour.” The school will be one of 23 tour stops across the nation this spring and will receive 1,300 pounds of produce and 450 vegetable plants to be given out to families in their school community.
In addition, Moulton will receive 50 plants for the school’s own garden. Experts from Burpee Home Gardens also will provide gardening resources, education and advice.
More than 1 million votes were cast on Facebook during the contest and 23 of the country’s largest urban cities were selected for a visit from the Burpee Home Gardens “Grow Anywhere Tour” truck which will visit Moulton on Wednesday, May 1 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
“This opportunity is wonderful for our students, staff and our community,” said Susan Rushing, Moulton kindergarten teacher and coordinator of the garden program. “We will be able to expand our existing garden and teachers will learn more about how to use the garden in the classroom curriculum.”
Students at Moulton helped plant and harvest the garden on school grounds last year. Teachers have used the produce from the garden in their classrooms to do taste tests and also for math and reading lessons.
The “Grow Anywhere Tour” focuses on inspiring new generations of urban gardeners to grow their own vegetables on their balcony, back patio, or as part of a neighborhood or community garden. The program focuses on the four E’s: Education, Eating Better, Environment, and Economy.
Moulton School also will hold registration for the 2013-2014 school year on May 1 from 2:00 to 7:00 PM.
