Learning Supports Department Screens Movie to Impel Conversation
The SUCCESS Program and the Project Connect Mentoring Program of the Des Moines Public Schools present a community education event with a special showing of the movie:

In Harlem, in 1987, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child as a result of being raped and impregnated twice by her father, is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction.
Whether you are a parent, an educator, a human service professional, a business person, a person of faith, or a caring citizen of our community, this event is for you. From the tragedy and hardship of this young woman’s life, we can learn how to keep hope alive for children in our own community.
Following the film, a panel of experts will discuss themes from the movie including:
- The social, emotional and behavioral challenges faced by many of our students;
- What the SUCCESS Program, Project Connect Mentoring Program and the Des Moines Public Schools are doing to address barriers to learning and provide students with caring adults;
- What the community can do to help students overcome obstacles and find the key to unlock the resiliency that resides in all of our young people.
