July 11 is “Back to School” for 1500 DMPS Students

While most students across the state are still enjoying a summer vacation, more than 1,500 Des Moines students will return to school on Wednesday, July 11 at Capitol View and River Woods elementary schools, and Moulton Extended Learning Center.

Des Moines Public Schools’ continuous calendar schools begin the school year in mid-July and end in early June. Breaks are spread throughout the year to optimize teaching and learning. In addition to a six-week summer break, students have a three-week fall break, a two-week winter break, a two-week spring break, and a week-long break in April. More students attend continuous calendar schools in Des Moines than the total enrollment at 290 Iowa school districts.

Capitol View Elementary, located at 320 E. 16^th St., serves over 500 students.

“We are very excited to have been chosen as a 21^st Century School this year,” said Marcia Johnson, Capitol View principal. “This grant will allow us to provide academic tutoring before and/or after school for our students as well as offering enrichment activities for our students.”

River Woods Elementary School, located at 2929 SE 22^nd St., serves nearly 600 students.

“The River Woods school community is looking forward to getting the 2012-13 school year started,” said Jill Burnett Requist, River Woods principal. “Families are invited to attend our Open House tonight from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. We look forward to seeing everyone!”

Moulton Extended Learning Center, located at 1541 8^th St., is home to over 400 students in grades PreK-8.

Classes begin at 8:15 a.m. at Capitol View and 8:35 a.m. at both Moulton and River Woods. There will be a 90-minute early dismissal on Wednesday at all three schools.
