Hubbell Elementary School Becomes International Baccalaureate World School

Hubbell Elementary School is officially an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School — making them the first elementary school in Iowa to offer the IB Primary Years Programme. The school will hold a public celebration on:

The celebration will include a parade of nations and a performance by the Isiserettes dance group. 

Hubbell Elementary School has implemented the IB Programme over the past three years. IB is a school-wide program providing a framework for teaching and learning that engages students in guided inquiry centered on universal concepts. Guided inquiry emphasizes students’ natural curiosity and provides them with an opportunity to ask questions and seek answers in a collaborative classroom where students and teachers work together to explore the curriculum.

A team of experts visited the school in March to observe progress and provide recommendations for further growth. Following the visit, officials at the IB Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland declared Hubbell School an IB World School. 

“Learning is what most adults will do for a living in the 21^st century and we are preparing these young people to be lifelong learners,” said Hubbell principal Tim Schott. “This important milestone on our IB journey was made possible by the teamwork of staff and parents willing to be risk-takers on behalf of our students.”  

Other schools in Des Moines Public Schools working toward becoming IB World Schools are Goodrell Middle School, Merrill Middle School, Park Avenue Elementary School, Stowe Elementary School, and Walnut Street School. Central Academy became an IB World School in 2009.
