Hanawalt Elementary Welcomes New Principal
Des Moines Public Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Kelly Schofield as the new principal of Hanawalt Elementary School. She replaces Andrew Burg, who left to pursue other opportunities.
Schofield hails from Hendersonville, N.C., and brings with her more than two-decades of experience as a classroom teacher, adjunct college professor and elementary school principal. Schofield has a BA in Elementary Education and an MA in Mathematics Education from Western Governors University in Utah.
“Kelly Schofield is an experienced educator and administrator who came up through the classroom, understands teachers and knows how to grow leaders among her staff to advance the learning environment for her students,” Superintendent Dr. Thomas Ahart said. “She also has a strong background as a mentor and is an avid supporter of public schools in the community.”
Schofield grew up in Indiana and has family in Beaverdale and Clive. She said she’s excited about moving to Des Moines and beginning work at Hanawalt.
“I hope to become part of the community of Hanawalt Elementary and continue to support and grow the strong sense of community and shared responsibility that the school already has,” Schofield said. “I want to support leadership and celebrate the gifts of students, staff and families as we work together for success in all areas.”
Schofield will start work at Hanawalt in the next few weeks.
