Flag Dedication Ceremony Honors Fallen Hoover High Alum

Hoover High School will hold a ceremony to dedicate an American flag to Sgt. Steve Mullins, a 1982 Hoover High School graduate who gave his life in service to our country.

Steve Mullins was a stand-out track athlete at Hoover High School. He joined the Army following graduation and perished along with 247 other soldiers of the 101st Air Assault Division when their plane, which was returning from a peacekeeping mission in the Sinai, crashed following takeoff in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, on December 12, 1985.

The flag, which will be displayed in the new Hoover-Meredith Technology Learning Center, was flown over the U.S. capitol in Steve’s honor on his 48th birthday.

“We are excited to honor this new space with an American flag tied to an alumni who gave his life in service to his country,” said Doug Wheeler, Hoover High School principal. “It is an honor to work with the family to dedicate this lasting symbol of honor for our school, country, and those that give their life in service to this country.”

Speakers for the event will include Principal Wheeler, Sandi McCann (Mullin’s mother), Ron Peterson (retired Hoover track coach), Lt. Col. Townley Hedrick with the 101^st AA Division, and Rep. Leonard Boswell.

The flag dedication will be in conjunction with Hoover High School homecoming activities and the induction of Steve Mullins and Eric Cooper (1985 graduate and MLB umpire) into the Hoover High School Hall of Fame.
