East High Educator Selected for Summer Academy

East High School U.S. History teacher Chris Kannapel has been selected to attend the Presidential Academy for American History and Civics in July 2010.

Over the course of 19 days, Kannapel and 68 other middle and high school teachers from the United States and other countries will travel to Gettysburg, Pa., Philadelphia, Pa., and Washington D.C. to study American History, including the Gettysburg Address and the “I Have a Dream” speech.

“The Presidential Academy is unique because we actually create lesson plans and collect documents to use in our classrooms,” said Kannapel. “I am looking forward to working with the other teachers to create documentary-based lessons to teach in the classroom.”

Kannapel has been a teacher with Des Moines Public Schools for four years. Prior to that, he taught in Glendale, Ariz. for 11 years.
