Central Academy Wins 2010 Middle School Science Bowl

Des Moines Public Schools’ Central Academy middle school science bowl team won the 2010 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional Middle School Science Bowl. Central Academy advances to the National Science Bowl®, to be held April 29 – May 4, 2010 in Washington, D.C. and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Central Academy team of Michael Cummings, Nicholas Parker, Maxwell Pilcher, Michael Shimp, and Rachel Suen won matches against Lynnville-Sully, Cedar Rapids McKinley, Home Schools of Eastern Iowa, and Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School of Dubuque.

The Central Academy middle school team, coached by Joyce Johnson, will join their older counterparts in making the trip to Washington, D.C. for the National Science Bowl. Central Academy won the High School Science Bowl Regional held in Ames on Jan. 30.

“These five middle school students are working hard to prepare themselves for the national competition,” said Johnson. “It will be a wonderful opportunity for them, and they are excited to see our country’s capitol as well as to interact with other strong science and math students from around the country.”
