Learn more about the process to fill the vacancy on the Des Moines School Board.

There’s an empty chair at the School Board’s table to be filled. Are you interested in serving on the Board? Or simply want to know more about the process to select a new School Board member? This web page contains a range of information about how this empty chair will be filled to ensure that all of Des Moines is well-represented on the School Board.

This vacancy was created on February 3, School Board member Touissant Cheatom, who represents District 2, announced his resignation from the Des Moines School Board effective that day for personal health reasons.

The term for this seat on the School Board was originally set to expire in September 2017.

However, due to the vacancy, the School Board now has 30 days to select and appoint a person to serve until the next election in September 2015. At that time voters in District 2 will elect someone to serve the remaining two years of the term.
