Madison’s Sarah Majoros: 2014 School Counselor of the Year

Sarah Majoros is already highly honored for her work as a school counselor, from earning grants from the Iowa School Counselor Association to awards from the American School Counselor Association.
So it’s only fitting that the Madison Elementary School counselor has been named the 2014 Iowa Elementary School Counselor of the Year by ISCA for going above and beyond to support her students in Des Moines.
“Ms. Majoros was recognized for the outstanding counseling program she has developed as well as for her leadership and advocacy in the field of school counseling,” note Clare Struck and Shelley Klaas, co-chairs of the ISCA award committee. “She is a model professional school counselor who will do an outstanding job of representing counselors across the state in her role as Iowa Elementary Counselor of the Year! “
Sarah received her master’s degree in Counselor Education from Iowa State University in 2004. Since then, she has been a school counselor with Des Moines Public Schools.
Sarah has been a leader at DMPS, serving on the K-12 Counseling Leadership Cadre, co-chairing the Curriculum Development Committee, and serving on the district’s Grief Response Team. Sarah has also supplied many professional development opportunities for her colleagues at the local, state, and national levels.
“She goes well beyond the job description to make sure students receive the care and love and support they need to be successful,” adds Madison principal Cory Heaberlin.
Those who recommended Sarah for this award repeatedly described her counseling leadership skills and her advocacy for those she serves.
As one of her nominators, Melissa Hanasz, who is also a teaching colleague and parent at Madison Elementary, says: “Working with Sarah over the last eight years has been an absolute privilege. The support that she gives classroom teachers and staff is above and beyond any expectation of a school counselor. She is the reason our building has success with students showing and having ‘great character.’ There is not a day that goes by in our third grade classroom that a student does not refer to a lesson or give a suggestion that Ms. Majoros has presented. Sarah’s kind heart, love of children, desire to make the world a better place, and diligent work ethic are rare in today’s world. She is truly making a difference in the lives of families and improving our growing community.”
Madison Elementary School – and Des Moines Public Schools – are fortunate to have dedicated professionals like Sarah Majoros, and congratulate her on being recognized as Iowa’s top elementary school counselor.
